Welcome to Art Advent – Your Chance to Win a Unique Piece of Art!
This December, we’re thrilled to bring you Art Advent, a celebration of exceptional works from our artist community. Each week, we feature a new creation, and for Week 2, we’re excited to showcase Lausanne-based artist Catherine Pearson’s 2025 Bamboo Calendar, celebrating the Year of the Snake!
Reinventing the Bamboo Calendar Tradition
This enchanting piece continues Catherine Pearson’s exploration of heritage and storytelling through art. Inspired by her Chinese-Swiss roots, last year Catherine reimagined the traditional bamboo scroll calendar, blending the nostalgia of classic Chinese prints with a vibrant, contemporary twist. While last year's calendar celebrated the Year of the Dragon, this year’s edition celebrates the Year of the Snake.
Inspiration & Story Behind the Art
The Year of the Snake calendar tells a story of calm reflection and inner strength. It's a symbol of wisdom, transformation, and personal growth. At its heart is a child, representing the curious and creative spirit of youth, surrounded by protective snakes. The design incorporates lucky bamboo and symbolic fruits like apples for prosperity and pomelos for good luck, all set against a lush and colorful tropical backdrop inspired by the beauty of Southeast Asian landscapes.
Another Basel Art Week Highlight
Catherine was one of the standout artists at the Basel Art Summer Camp, where she impressed everyone with her large scale mural at Hyve Hostel, our home for the week of Art Basel this year. Even in June, halfway through the year, her 2024 calendar for the Year of the Dragon was a huge hit, with many visitors taking one home. Catherine’s calendars have become a hallmark of her work, practical pieces of art that bring joy and inspiration every day.
